Imagining Curatorial Vision in Performance: An International Symposium on Performance Curation 2017

The notion of performance curation is one of the key aspects of contemporary curatorial practices, and as curatorial and art practices, methodologies and ideas become more and more hybrid and expansive — to include “dematerialized objects” and the “ephemeral” (Lippard, 1997), whether by collection, documentation and archiving (Jones, 1997; Auslander, 2006; Laurenson and van Saaze, 2014), re-enactment (Jones, 2011), and/or “live art” presentation (Phelan, 1993; Heathfield, 2004) — performance becomes one of the central forms and modes of inquiry in expressing the state of contemporary art. But, as art curators, historians, critics and theorists fumble “to pinpoint what really constitutes contemporary curating” (Fowle, 2012) while its language remains “nascent, or at best tentative,” (Fowle, 2012), performance curation as a field remains elusive.

The PCI symposium 2017 is a gathering to initiate conversations on the emerging field of performance curation – its imaginings, notions, practices and possibilities – from various disciplines, fields, demography and geographies. It will be graced by local and international presenters, practitioners, and scholars, from Canada, Australia, Japan, the U.S. and all over the Philippines.

Through this symposium, we invite all interested participants to part of PCI’s network.

  1. To gather practitioners and scholars from all over the globe and especially nationwide to converse on the notion and practice of performance curation and its possibilities.
  2. To make a compendium of essays and articles on performance curation as a base reader for the field.
  3. To foster networking and collaborations amongst performance curators throughout the globe.
